The number of people seeking counseling services has greatly increased, both in the US and in other countries. Pastors who are able to provide high-quality pastoral counseling services will have an extremely valuable and often life-changing ministry to offer their churches and communities.
The Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling (MAPC) is designed to equip ministers with the skills and competencies needed to succeed in the field of pastoral counseling. Some of the skills students will learn in this program include:
The theological framework, structure, systems, documentation, and other resources that are necessary for ethical and effective pastoral counseling practice.
Becoming familiar with various types of mental health disorders that exist, and physical disorders that mimic mental health disorders.
Learning to discern and distinguish between the mental, emotional, spiritual, environmental, and relational problems that people face.
Exploring the possibility of integrating modern psychological principles into pastoral counseling, when appropriate.
Learning to help counselees set goals and focus on them.
Gaining knowledge in various special populations such as premarital, marital, family, child & adolescent counseling, and serving people with special needs.
Recognizing and understanding the importance of supervision, consultation, and collaboration in counseling.
