Reflections on African Council Cohort Dmin Program

There are seasons of growth and seasons of gathering momentum. African Pentecostalism continues to gain strength as it moves forward in the Kingdom of God. In many ways, the growth of Pentecostalism in Africa is at such a fast rate that the educators cannot keep pace with its growth. Such growth comes along with a lot of pain. It is like raising a preadolescent child, who is growing fast and will soon be an adult. A parent may try to prepare this child for life, but sometimes they grow so fast that sometimes they may surprise a parent with what they learn and do.

The Church of God has been doing its work in establishing the educational foundations to keep pace with this growth in Africa. During the time of pandemic in 2021, a dialogue began with the Africa Council to begin a Doctor of Ministry (DMin) program for Africa. Several of those in the Africa Council are Pentecostal Theological Seminary alumni, such as Field Director, Dr. Peter Thomas (DMin 2019); Education Director, Jürgen Rudolph (MDiv 2000); Berea Theological University College President, Scott Rains (MA 1997); Chaplaincy Director, Dr. Paul Stockard (DMin 2008); and Youth Director, Dr. B. Randall Parris (MDiv 1991).

During a period of dialogue, the Africa Council chose the Pentecostal Theological Seminary’s DMin program to continue educating their top leadership. In late 2021, the Africa Council sent a representative to the Pentecostal Theological Seminary to meet with the President, Michael L. Baker, and the Dean, Dr. David Han, to establish a Memorandum of Understanding for a new cohort to start in the Spring semester of 2022. Upon a successful signing of the new MOU, the Africa Council recruited some of the top leaders in Africa that meet the educational and ministerial requirements for entrance into the Seminary’s DMin program. The students all have earned a theological master’s degree. The students also represent some of the top African church leadership. Some of them serve as Superintendents for whole regions of Africa. Others are national overseers, education directors, and youth directors.

The first DMin cohort met in Lusaka, Zambia, for three weeks between march and April of 2022. They took classes in person and via live stream technology. The Pentecostal Theological Seminary has been intentionally creative in shortening long distances and in providing relevant contextual materials for its students. Many of the students expressed their appreciation for such a model and for the way in which the Seminary has bridged what appear to be massive sociocultural gaps.

There is a lot of excitement surrounding the Doctor of Ministry Program, especially because this it provides the space to reflect theologically about Pentecostal ministry praxis in Africa. The students involved in the program listed their focus area as one of the following: leadership, education, church planting, or youth ministry. It is the hope of the new cohort to provide educational and ministerial written resources for the work of the church in Africa. The students also expressed their hope to produce dissertations of such quality that they may be published and read widely in the church in Africa and beyond.
