The Primary Purpose of the Pentecostal Theological Seminary Doctor of Ministry degree is to nurture and train selected men and women to minister from a Wesleyan-Pentecostal perspective. The degree addresses the general practice of ministry at an advanced level of competence in the various ministerial vocations. Graduates will be expected to function in the truest sense as “doctors” of Christian ministry, i.e., ministers who will teach, coach, and mentor others in the practice of ministry.

The ministerial vocations include (but are not limited to) (1) preaching the Word, (2) teaching the Faith, (3) providing pastoral care and counsel to the hurting, (4) evangelizing the lost, (5) leading in worship, (6) discipling others in Christian living, (7) challenging and enabling all members of the faith community to fulfill their callings in Christ, (8) facilitating koinonia within and among Christian congregations, (9) modeling and facilitating Christian ministries of mercy and justice in society at large, (10) overseeing and administering the various ministries of the local church.

It is our desire (1) to help you become the best minister you can be by maximizing your gifts and callings, (2) to help you become a minister who effectively works with others in ministry, and (3) to help you become a mentor/coach of other ministers.

DEGREE PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES

Graduates of the Doctor of Ministry degree program of the Pentecostal Theological Seminary will, from a distinctively Wesleyan-Pentecostal perspective and at a level appropriate to doctors of the church, be able …

1. to articulate an informed personal theology of ministry, one which combines theory and practice, and to integrate that personal theology into the practices of ministry.
2. to critically integrate contemporary Biblical and theological scholarship into his or her personal theology of ministry and into the practice of ministry.
3. to use critical reasoning and empirical methodology to “read” a ministry context in terms of religious, social, economic and political realities.
4. to use appropriate research methods to develop and test strategies for ministry improvement.
5. to work with others as a team (1) to discern contextual ministry needs, (2) to plan for more effective ministry practices, and (3) to implement and evaluate changes in ministry practice.
6. to teach, coach, and/or mentor others in one or more of the ministry practices.
7. to make ongoing contributions to the church’s understanding of and practice of Spirit-filled, Spirit-led ministry.
